Walking the common paths is usually a wise thing to do. You shouldn’t deviate from a path unless you have a very good reason to do it.
In creativity, on the same condition of good sense, there is great advantage in deviating upon untouched paths.
Blinding yourself to alien ways will prevent you from seeing the grand rainbow of possibility. And you must see it, for it is wonderful. As soon as you liberate your mind of “the only way to do something”, you can tap into an unlimited spring of ideas.
Try it by turning things around.
Write a story from the end to the beginning. Paint with your eyes closed. Yell out a song. Whisper a song.
Find new ways to look at things and allow them to reach deep into your life.
